Critical Analysis

Category: Essay Writing

Critically analyzing what is presented to you whether in books, articles, mass media, or popular culture is an essential component of the scholarly process. Not only should we as scholars be able to read and understand information presented to us, but we must also have the ability to interpret information, identify the key arguments/perspectives and place the arguments presented within their proper context. For this written assignment, students are to write an analysis of one of the assigned films, documentaries, or musical selections listed in the “Films and Other Media” section of the module.

The essay must address the larger historical/contemporary situation the selected media refers to. This is easiest accomplished by relating the document to themes addressed in the assigned readings for the module. Part of the analysis must also address the political, economic, social, and/or cultural implications of the document based on your understanding of Latin America. The essay should be at least three (3) pages typed, double – spaced, 12 pt. Times New Roman font and no more than five (5) pages.

Questions to consider when writing your analysis are as follows:
1) What is the film about? (What are the main themes/details covered in the film? This can be a brief summary of the plot).

2) What is the larger historical, political, economic, social, and/or cultural context that the film addresses? (How is the document related to what you have read in the first two modules of the course?)

3) From what point of view is the author of the project coming from? Does their perspective prejudice them? Do they understand the nuances of the societal issues that they are presenting?

4) How does the work inform your understanding of the country it represents? Do the themes covered in the work resonate across other countries? The region?
