Students are required to demonstrate the competencies listed below through the comparison and contrast of three or more works of art. Compare and contrast art works selected from the course. (Jasper Johns “Flag”, Kara Walker’s, “Insurrection”, and Johannes Vermeer’s, “Woman Holding a Balance”) Use the scoring rubric below as a guide for writing your essay and for self- assessing your work. Discuss the artwork and not the representation or photograph of the artwork in the text.

 

1. Identify characteristics of historical periods of art from prehistory to 21st century.
2. Discuss representative artists and their works.
3. Define terminology related to various artistic genres.
The essay should be concise and to the point with specific references to the artworks that are being examined and approximately three pages (12 pt., double space) in length. Cover sheets are not necessary but do note your name on the document. Include at least two references other than the textbook. DO NOT use Wikipedia as a reference.

GOAL #1
States multiple examples of how the artwork represents the historical period and how it differs from the historical period and provides in-depth explanations.

GOAL #2
States multiple examples of how artist is representative of historical period with in depth explaination

GOAL #3 Accurate, multiple and insightful use of terms that describe art, artist and period.

Explain the fundamental principles of line, shape, value, color, space, composition, and texture in the art.
1. Explain how artists employ the formal elements and/or principles to create coherent works of art.
2. Recognize and discuss historical periods, styles, and movements in art.
