In this experiment you will be required to locate pictures of spiders, kittens and mushrooms.

Press the space bar when you are ready to begin.

Instructions for ‘Normal’ Condition

Ok, in this section of the study you need to have your keyboard at its normal orientation.

At the beginning of each block of trials, you will be told whether you are searching for spiders, mushrooms or kittens.

If you a see a picture of your target you will need to press ‘p’ (for present) as quickly as you can.

If you are shown a display that doesn’t contain your target, press ‘a’ (for absent), as quickly as you can.

During the task you should keep your index fingers on the ‘a’ and ‘p’ keys so that you can respond as quickly as possible.

Press the space bar when you are ready to do a few practice trials.

Remember, you need to respond as QUICKLY and ACCURATELY as you can.

Place your index fingers over these keys and press the space bar to begin.

Instructions for ‘Approach’ Condition

Ok, in this section of the study you need to have your keyboard turned long-ways.

Turn it now so that the number pad (normally on your right) is closest to you.

At the beginning of each block of trials, you will be told whether you are searching for spiders, mushrooms or kittens.

If you a see a picture of your target you will need to press ‘s’ as quickly as you can.

If you are shown a display that doesn’t contain your target, press ‘5’ on the number pad as quickly as you can.

During the task, only respond with one hand: your right, if you’re right-handed, or your left, if you’re left-handed.

You should place this hand palm down on your desk, midway between the two ends of the keyboard.

This is where it needs to be at the start of each trial during this part of the study.

Keep it there until you see the pictures, then move it as quickly as you can to press the appropriate key, then move it back ready for the start of the next trial.

It doesn’t matter too much if you miss the button you’re aiming for.

All the keys around ‘s’ and all the keys on the number pad will count as correct, so try to respond as quickly as you can.

As long as you press a button in about the right spot, that will be close enough!
